oh New York, you beauty. adventurous & strong, vast yet inclusive.
the original New York lipstick, then called ‘USA!’ was launched in 2014 to celebrate the brand’s first birthday. it was a blend of red iron oxide & red 7 dye; a deep, empowering tone. the name changed to New York in January 2018 during an exciting trip (hello Grammys!) to The Big Apple alongside dunkle gal Emily.
batch 13 however, comes with a change of pace…
when I first started designing the dunkle authentic lipstick formulas back in 2012 and 2013, I had a vision for the colours to be made purely with mineral pigments. while this was achievable for some shades, I also craved bold reds & brighter pinks which led me to incorporate a red 7 dye into the blends.
in 2018 I consciously decided to go back to my original vision of mineral pigments; they are simpler to manufacture with, provide a creamier texture on the skin, & better align with my brand values. slowly but surely I have been reformulating each shade much to my delight, however felt most apprehensive about recreating THE red...
well, multiple tests & tweaks later & hellooo New York!
batch 13 is a simple blend of two shades of red iron oxide & I am SO excited by the result. bold, yet curious & inclusive with it’s warmer tone.
naturally, dunkle gal Emily was the fitting choice to model New York lipstick for us. an incredible musician, avid vintage shopper, & Broadway enthusiast, Emily adores New York City and travels there every opportunity she gets.
for this look, I prepped Emily’s skin with face oil then buffed in no. 3 foundation. we added definition with a few coats of mascara & brow pencil, San Francisco lipstick on cheeks, & finished with THE New York on her lips.
pausing to admire the art deco influence around Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, we channeled our own NYC vibes from ‘down under’ for this shoot & reminisced about our whirlwind adventure there together last year. a huge thank you, lovely gal.
enjoy the new batch!
